26 August 2011 Supporting intra-Africa trade should be a matter of urgency, says Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Elizabeth Thabethe. “The recently launched agreement for the establishment of the Tripartite Free Trade Area has made it more urgent to promote intra-Africa trade, and that should be at the top of the continent’s economic agenda,” Thabethe said at the South Africa-Ghana Business Forum in Cape Town on Wednesday. The free trade area centres on building Africa’s biggest free trade bloc, merging the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC). “Strengthening trade and investment links with the continent is a key policy priority of the government, both to benefit our economy and more importantly, those of our partners on the continent.” Thabethe said African countries had the potential to develop into modern industrialised states that could compete on the world stage, due to their richness in natural resources. The forum, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry, took place on the second day of the state visit to South Africa by Ghanaian President John Atta Mills, who was accompanied by a strong business delegation. On Wednesday the department, through Trade and Investment South Africa, also signed a memorandum of understanding on trade investment the Ghanaian Investment Authority. Since 2003, bilateral trade between the two countries has been growing, with annual trade statistics indicating South African exports to Ghana to the value of R2.523-billion and imports from Ghana worth R84.275-million. 21 July 2014 While the government thanked those South Africans who dedicated 67 minutes of their time to cleaning up their surroundings on Friday, the Nelson Mandela Foundation thanked all those from around the world who turned out in support of the first Mandela Day since Mandela’s passing. In South Africa, President Jacob Zuma’s clean-up campaign in the Eastern Cape was accompanied by clean-up initiatives – and a host of other volunteer and community service activities – by government departments, companies, organisations and communities countrywide. “Our country is the perfect example of what can be achieved when people come together because of our history,” Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said on Friday. “Every individual has the ability and responsibility to impact positive change.” The Nelson Mandela Foundation said it was heartened by the number of sustainable projects still thriving, five years after the first Mandela Day in 2009. “At the same time it has been inspiring to see the range of innovative new projects to emerge,” the foundation said. “And we welcome the degree to which structures of the state, of civil society and in the private sector are working together for the campaign.” Mandela Day activations were recorded in 126 countries, with over 1 200 activities registered on the Mandela Day website. Nearly half-a-million food parcels were distributed to needy South Africans. Over a million sanitary towels were made available to South African schoolgirls. “Drawing on volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, the US and South Africa, Habitat for Humanity built another 67 houses for those in need. And we recorded over 15 000 books donated to school libraries on the day itself. “Of course, the heart of Mandela Day is not about numbers and statistics,” the foundation said. “It is about building sustainable cultures of service, overcoming alienation, and inspiring people to change their societies so that fundamental systemic issues are addressed. “Let us demonstrate that the legacy of Nelson Mandela is a living one. Let us make Mr Mandela proud, every day.” Source: SAnews.gov.za
Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Roger Thompson at Exploit Prevention Labs has discovered multiple hacked MySpace pages, including MySpace’s #4 most popular major music artist Alicia Keys. Other bands hit include Greements of Fortune (a French funk band) and Dykeenies (a rock band from Glasgow).Roger noted that “attacks on MySpace seem to be on the rise.” He says that the current hack, affecting Alicia Keys’ MySpace page and others, is an image-background link which, when clicked, entices users to install a fake codec – which then infects the user’s computer. He calls it a “FakeCodec trick” and here’s how it works: if a user clicks on a MySpace page and slightly misses a control or link on that page, they have clicked the image-bg link and are then taken instead to the exploit site. Roger explains more in this video: Tags:#news#social networks#web Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Related Posts The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos richard macmanus A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit To summarize, when a user visits the infected page, they’re first hit by an exploit (which installs malware in the background if they’re not fully patched against the latest security vulnerabilities), and next they’re presented with a Fake Codec which tells them they need to install a codec to view a video. So even if they’re patched, they can fall victim to the exploit.Roger said via an email that “it’s MySpace that has been hacked, as opposed to the bad guysgetting the usernames and passwords of a few bands”.The fact that MySpace is media-rich, with lots of sound and videos, means that the FakeCodec trick will be much more effective — said Roger on his blog. The user, when clicking on the page, will expect to see a video or hear a song – but the hack will make them think they need to install something extra.Let us know in the comments if you’ve heard of other MySpace hacks recently – or Facebook hacks for that matter.
mike melanson Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… There’s something about paying bills – the checkbook, the stamps, the envelopes, the taste of the adhesive – that just rubs me the wrong way. It isn’t even the money making a one-way march out of my account, that’s just inevitable. If I never had to deal with a paper bill again, my life would be happier. My world may have just gotten a little rosier, as one company has just released a tool to make paying those paper bills possible by iPhone, Android and Blackberry.Mitek Mobile has developed an app that lets you pay your bills by simply taking a picture of the bill you want to pay and verifying your payment information.According to the demo video, the app scans the bill for basic information, such as address, company name and payment amount. It then allows you to verify the information before completing the transaction through your bank account. As Mitek puts it, it sounds like the “easiest way to pay non-recurring bills”, but why not simply use your bank account? While paying bills like your electricity or Internet might be simple to automate through your bank’s website, it sounds like this app is for the random medical bill that insists on a check or money order. For my money, I’d like to see individual apps like AT&T’s own iPhone app, which integrates bill payment with the ability to customize my account, manage my information and view my usage statistics. For the AT&T app, I was lured in with payment, but it’s everything else that’s kept me from calling up their customer service lines and using up their resources.Mitek offers a number of other mobile apps that allow you to deposit checks, fax documents and more, all using your smartphone. House Republicans unveiled the much anticipated “Tax Reform 2.0” legislative package on September 10. The package consists of three separate bills, which focus on individual and small business tax cuts, retirement savings, and business innovation.Tax Reform 2.0The Tax Reform 2.0 package includes:– The American Innovation Bill of 2018 (HR 6756);– The Family Savings Bill of 2018 (HR 6757); and– The Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Bill of 2018 (HR 6760).The package aims to make permanent the individual and small business tax cuts enacted through 2025 under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) (P.L. 115-97). Additionally, it would create new incentives for retirement savings and business innovation (TAXDAY, 2018/09/07, C.1).“Now it’s time to change the culture in Washington where we only do tax reform once a generation,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Tex., said in a September 10 press release. “Now it’s the time to ensure we never let our tax code become so outdated again,” he added.Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are criticizing House Republicans’ Tax Reform 2.0 efforts. “With this second attempt at major tax legislation, congressional Republicans have doubled down on their initial tax scam and are yet again putting the wealthiest, most privileged Americans ahead of average, hardworking families,” Ways and Means ranking member Richard Neal, D-Mass., said in a September 10 statement.Next StepsThe Ways and Means Committee is expected to hold a markup of the Tax Reform 2.0 package on Thursday, September 13. The measure will reach the House floor for a full chamber vote by the end of September, according to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.By Jessica Jeane, Senior News EditorHR 6756, American Innovation Act of 2018HR 6757, Family Savings Act of 2018Login to read more tax news on CCH® AnswerConnect or CCH® Intelliconnect®.Not a subscriber? This conch shell trumpet would be heard far and wide in the ancient world It’s not hard to imagine a gladiator fight in early Rome, or Polynesians navigating the oceans thousands of years ago on outrigger canoes. But how our ancestors heard ancient instruments is harder to conjure. A new tool may help. In a study published this month in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, researchers developed a spreadsheet to calculate how sound waves propagate in the physical environment, accounting for variables such as distance, air temperature, and humidity. Then they modeled how a conch shell trumpet (pictured)—a musical instrument used in various ritual ceremonies—would be heard throughout the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, an important cultural center for the pre-Columbian Pueblo people. (It may have sounded something like this.) A conch blown on a summer morning about 1000 years ago at Pueblo Bonito, a village located in the middle of the canyon, would be heard throughout downtown Chaco within a radius of almost 1.5 kilometers, the scientists report. At this time there are no recordings of the Chaco “soundscape,” but in the future the team hopes to record the sounds of recreated ancient instruments, including shell trumpets and bone flutes, to gather more information about the acoustic footprint of the past.Shell trumpet sound by Alejandro Méndez courtesy of International Study Group of Music Archaeology.Sign up for our daily newsletterGet more great content like this delivered right to you!Country *AfghanistanAland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBolivia, Plurinational State ofBonaire, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos (Keeling) IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo, The Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCote D’IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzech RepublicDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEthiopiaFalkland Islands (Malvinas)Faroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and Mcdonald IslandsHoly See (Vatican City State)HondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIran, Islamic Republic ofIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea, Democratic People’s Republic ofKorea, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People’s Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyan Arab JamahiriyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMacedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic ofMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMoldova, Republic ofMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorwayOmanPakistanPalestinianPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalQatarReunionRomaniaRussian FederationRWANDASaint Barthélemy Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint Martin (French part)Saint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint Maarten (Dutch part)SlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwazilandSwedenSwitzerlandSyrian Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania, United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTurkeyTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuela, Bolivarian Republic ofVietnamVirgin Islands, BritishWallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabweI also wish to receive emails from AAAS/Science and Science advertisers, including information on products, services and special offers which may include but are not limited to news, careers information & upcoming events.Required fields are included by an asterisk(*) By Giorgia GuglielmiJul. 14, 2017 , 11:15 AM

Aritz Aduriz’s hat trick powered Athletic Club to a 4-0 rout of reigning Spanish and European champion FC Barcelona here in the first leg of Spain’s Super Cup.Barca, who snagged their fourth trophy of 2015 earlier this week with an exciting 5-4 overtime win over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup, will need another outstanding performance in Monday’s second leg at the Nou Camp to sustain their pursuit of six titles in a calendar year.Athletic, without a trophy in 31 years, spent the opening 10 minutes of the match in Bilbao chasing Barcelona, who played their trademark possession game. But the home side’s first offensive foray provoked an uncharacteristic error by Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, whose misjudged clearance set the stage for a spectacular goal by Mikel San Jose. The German keeper sent the ball into a cluster of players in midfield.San Jose let loose a rocket that travelled the nearly 50 meters (55 yards) into the right corner of the net before Ter Stegen could react.Lionel Messi, whose two goals off of free kicks were key to Barca’s triumph in the UEFA Super Cup, had an opportunity to equalize on a set piece late in the first half, but Athletic keeper Iraizoz made a tremendous stop.Barcelona got two more chances early in the second half, but Pedro – who scored the winning goal against Sevilla – hit the crossbar and Messi was stymied again by Iraizoz.Just as it seemed Barca were bound to score, Aduriz delivered the first of his three goals with a thundering header in the 52nd minute.advertisementAduriz struck again 10 minutes later, exploiting the latest in a series of mistakes by Dani Alves, and completed the hat trick when he converted a penalty in the 67th minute.
