Kolkata: The state government has taken steps to construct two bridges — one on Chetla Canal Road and the other on Humayun Kabir Sarani — adjacent to the Majerhat bridge to ease out traffic congestion. Several steps have been taken to construct alternate roads so that people of Behala and also South 24-Parganas do not face much trouble in the absence of Majerhat bridge. The state Public Works Department (PWD) has engaged the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited to construct the bridges across a canal that passes through the area. There are two roads adjacent to the Majerhat bridge, both of which are almost ready and after carrying out some work, the bailey bridges can be set up across the canal. Each of the bridges will be of 80 feet in length and 4.5 metre in width. It would cost around Rs 2 crore to build the bridges. Each of them will be able to carry 87 tonne load. The agency will set up the bridge after the state PWD completes the civil part of the work.
