first_img One of the space age’s greatest American icons, Neil Armstrong, is finally getting his own biopic, and there are some big names working on it.Damien Chazelle, the director behind the Oscars’ most prominent “meh” entry this year, La La Land and his star Ryan Gosling, will be teaming up for the film, which is set to start filming in 2017.There’s been speculation for a while that Gosling was attached to the project, but no script had been written yet. The current script, which is based off James Hansen’s biography First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong, was written by Josh Singer, who recently penned the Best Picture winner Spotlight. The biography focuses on NASA’s moon mission in the 1960s, which culminated in Apollo 11 bringing Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon. Armstrong became the first person to walk along its surface, followed by Aldrin (Collins piloted the command module). Variety reported that the film would “explore the sacrifices and the cost–on Armstrong and America–of one of the most dangerous space missions in history.”With the upcoming release of Hidden Figures, which film critic Bob Chipman called a “compelling, compulsively watchable biographical drama,” it looks like Hollywood is doubling down on NASA-based stories. Hidden Figures is about the John Glenn mission in 1962, but an Armstrong biopic that focuses on the Apollo 11 mission could reignite our interest in 50-year-old NASA.We also just love space here at Geek, so any movie that talks about NASA is alright by us.Either way, the story of Neil Armstrong is a complex one. He wasn’t just an astronaut, but an instant celebrity after his voyage. He went on to teach, work in business, and even traveled to the North Pole in his later years. He died in 2012 after complications from a coronary bypass surgery but is still considered one of the most famous astronauts of all time.
